What is Bateria?
Bateria is the name given to a group of musicians that play percussion instruments in the Samba Schools of Rio de Janeiro. Most of these instruments were introduced in Brazil by the African people in the colonization period. Across the years they were mixed with the Brazilian culture, which created different rhythms that will be taught during the classes such as samba from Rio and batucada from Bahia, a northern state.

Bateria at Wharton
A Whalasa tradition, the group has its presence guaranteed at the Wharton International Cultural Show every year and performs at Pub and some Whalasa parties. The bateria classes held every Tuesday, 6-8pm, are taught by Alex Shaw, a professional teacher hired to lead the "music talented" students to become accomplished drummers... That is a joke! And that's why we have so much FUN learning. Come and join us! Partners are also welcomed!
